Katrina in Latex

To preserve the memory of homes lost in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, artist Takashi Horisaki is racing against time, and bulldozers. The artist is in the process of covering (painstakingly, by hand) one of the few remaining homes in one devastated area of New Orleans in latex, with the idea of making a complete replica to be displayed in a park in Queens, NY. Said Horisaki, "I think I should bring the real scale, but we can't afford to bring the entire house, so maybe just the skin."

The finished sculpture will show the shotgun home as it was after the disaster—a more permanent reminder of the personal loss in minute detail.

From the Washington Post, 7/9/07.
